COTV Annual Picnic
June 9, 2019

As the date for the annual picnic drew nearer, the Leadership Team got more concerned as summer weather seemed never to arrive. Remember our Memorial Day 2019 MLR? Well, if you were there, you would remember the rain, cold and fog and just missing a snowfall at Lake Arrowhead. It seems that we fretted and worried in vain, as Summer is here, folks, and it arrived just in time for the picnic.

In 2019, we returned to a familiar former location for our picnic, Wolf Creek Park in Temecula. The advantages to this park are numerous – grassy lawns, easy to find location, gazebos with concrete picnic tables, restrooms (although they ARE park restrooms so no 5 star amenities!) and parking in either the lot or on the street backing the park. The disadvantages are less numerous but can be daunting – no reservations taken, no alcohol allowed, no food vendors on site just deliveries.
So we worked around them to provide a happy day in the sun for the membership.

A group arrived early to stake out as many tables as needed with yellow caution tape, which means most of the park. Thanks to Ray and Judy for giving up their very early morning on a busy family day to meet at the park, clean tables, empty trash, do the preliminary set-ups, lay out the bocce ball court, and hang around until Doug and Marilyn arrived to continue with the early prep. Thanks to Bill Stedfield for picking up our old tables from Scott Dittmer at Precision and bringing them and a nice big cooler at 9am. Thanks to Wayne and Daphne for bringing their new car to continue helping to set things up. Thanks to John and Jerri-Lynne for helping with a Costco dessert shopping trip in advance. Thanks to Harry and Sharon for bringing the pop-ups to put over the food tables. Huge thanks to Curt and Darlena for so much – researching food vendors and ordering both Dickey’s barbecue and pizza, for bringing more chips from another Costco trip, and setting up a Hawaiian themed “photo booth” and taking numerous pictures of the happy attendees. Really Huge thanks to Mike Re for organizing the whole shebang, doing his own shopping for drinks, and being there early to set up and staying later to clean up.

We thank the members (we think there were 66 of you!) who came to have fun and to do what we do best, eat and talk. It was good to see both the old (in terms of membership, not age) members like Bill and Sandi, Joe and Rosemary, Vance and Susan and Mike and Micha, as well as the newer ones, the Erhardts, who are now turning up more and more so must be enjoying their car and maybe the company and the Orsinis who are not so new any more.

A final big thanks to those stalwart folks who stepped up to help clean up. The true worth of a friend is measured by their willingness to clean up someone else’s mess before an event and then clean up their own mess after one of our own. Good luck to whoever plans next year’s picnic, because Mike has set a high bar to meet!
